Project Design

The initial idea of doing a project on mussel foot protein came from a group discussion. At first, we have thought about the repair of meniscus, which led us to the mussel foot protein. We all did research about MFPs and Yiyang Jiang raised an idea of using MFP to produce a kind of waterproof band-aid. During the meet up held by SZU-iGEM, Boxiang Wang, as the judge, Boxiang Wang gave us lots of advice that we may bind our protein with other proteins to make a more functioning protein bond-aid. After the paper researching, Yiyang Jiang suggested that combine the MFP with MASP and with the help of Doctor. Fu, Yuyang Liu suggested to add EGF in the bond-aid to achieve a better rate of recovery of skins. Qidang Ye found supporting articles for both MFP and EGF.

Acknowledgment

The way to accomplish our project was not a plain sailing. Shenzhen_SFLS has experienced many difficulties during the research of our project. We’ve received a lot of help from different people from our HPs or Outreaches. We would like to raise a grateful thanks to them for giving us their kindest and practical supports.

Boxiang Wang:

As a judge of the meet up organised by SZU-iGEM in May, Boxiang Wang gave us lots of advice that binding our protein with other proteins to make a more functioning protein bond-aid.

Weizhao Chen

Weizhao Chen is the professor of Shenzhen University, also the instructor of SZU-iGEM, who gave us numerous mount of advises and suggestions on our project. He provided us lots of information and supports on our experiment.

Dr. Ge Dongliang and Dr. Zhang

Dr. Ge Dongliang and Dr. Zhang took part in one of our meeting that the topic are about some of the design scheme for the project. Two PhDs gave some suggestions on which proteins we are choosing, and provided some special areas that we need to focus on when we looked at the literature, which is of great help to our project at the beginning of our iGEM journey.

Doctor Fu

he suggested that we can add something with the high repairing ability and mentioned two things we can do with, which are EGF and Aloe vera gel. He introduced both of them to us and a proper way to manufacture this type of product. After we almost finishing the experiments, Doctor.Fu presented a new concept about wounding the skin to help our product, which is ‘Moist wound healing.’ After searching relevant literature, we found that this method has been used in clinical therapy, and it has a good effect on healing and prospects, which may be another application of our project.

Mr. Chen

Mr.Chen, who is a director in Kamp Medicine, a medical factory in Foshan. After introducing our project and what we done for our whole item, he raised that we can think about other applications, not only the band-aid, but also some other reagents. He has mentioned that there are already some researchers who study about the mussel foot protein, which is our main protein in our project. Regarding our normal forms of application, which is manufacturing band-aid, he presented that we can produce it as the form of freeze-dried powder and gel.

SZU-iGEM Team

SZU-iGEM Team is the iGEM team of Shenzhen University. During the experiment part, they shared their laboratory with us. Also, during conducting the experiment, the member of SZU-iGEM gave abundance of help and instructions on experiments and shared lots of experience of life in lab to us. In Human Practice part, they also shared a lot of experience to us and held a Forum with us.

Shenzhen University

Shenzhen University is one of the best college in Shenzhen. Due to the bio-level of the laboratory in our school (Shenzhen Foreign Languages School) not reaching the standard for carrying out our experiments, We cannot start our experiment. After contacting the Shenzhen University, Shenzhen University consented that we can conduct experiment in the laboratory SZU-iGEM, which is absolutely a great help for us.

Zhengfeng Liu

Zhengfeng Liu is the student leader of Shenzhen_SFLS 2014, he gave lots of advice to our project and critical opinions on the use of EGF. Also, he helped to deal with the WeChat

Dafei Wang,Qiuyan Chen

Dafei Wang, as a website engineer, he helped us construct and design our wiki page.

Xuehua Du

Xuehua Du helped us design three different team Logos after realising our aim and project. One of the three Logos became our Logo that we are using right now.

Xiaoqi Guo

Xiaoqi Guo is a student in Shenzhen Foreign Languages School. She helped with the design of key chain of our team which were sold in the club day of SFLS.

Pre-iGEM training & project start:

Our PI Peilin Li gave us lecture and training about bio-safety and pre-iGEM training in April. Weizhao Chen, the professor of Shenzhen University, gave us training about the experiment and basic theory in May. The project started at May and the experiment started at early September.
