General Safety
Following standard lab safety procedures:
Members working in the lab are required to wear gloves, lab coats, and safety goggles at all times, in order to prevent possible injuries or contamination of the different substances. The lab procedures were done under the supervision of the professor at Naresuan University. Everyone was aware of all standard safety procedures. Drinking or eating food within the lab is strictly forbidden. Wastes go through a disposal process before being discarded. An example would be discarding Ethidium Bromide, which is used during the process of gel electrophoresis, by using UV light to evaporate it, then discarding it through general biological trash.
Our thoroughly completed iGEM safety form illustrates our commitment to safety while performing our lab procedures.
Choosing a non-pathogenic microorganism:
Microorganisms that were used in the lab including E.coli DH5-α and A. brasilense. E.coli DH5-α was used as the chassis for cloning the nitrogen-fixing genes. Nitrogen-fixing genes were extracted from A. brasilense. The microorganisms belong to risk group 1 as they are non-pathogenic and oppose no harm towards humans.
