PROJECT DESIGN

Nithan Tantitanawat, Matchamon Pianapitham, Jitboon Puttharugsa

We are proud to be the first Thai team to compete in this competition. We wanted to find meaningful ways to make an impact on Thai farmers through the use of synthetic biology. Additionally, we had shifted our aim towards rice, specifically, synthesizing nitrogen-fixing rice. With the guidance of Dr. Maliwan Nakkuntod, the method we chose was to transfer the genes associated with nitrogen fixation in Azospirillum brasilense into Agrobacterium, a bacteria that could infect rice and transfer its genetic material into plants. Hence the problem of the overuse of chemical fertilizer in Thailand is reduced.

WET LAB

Two phases of our lab are the transmission of Nif genes from A. brasilense to E. coli and from E. coli to Agrobacterium. Our team members of 7 had contributed to the wet lab, under the supervision of Dr. Maliwan and her students: Sunisa Luanglue, Piyamongkol Mangkalasane, and Phirawat Apichatsuksun.

HUMAN PRACTICES

Our social interaction has been made with 3 groups of audience: the public, our high school’s staff and students. For the public, we are able to increase the recognition of our project by presenting it to an international audience during the Giant Jamboree, requesting companies for sponsorship, and featuring in our school’s magazine, Ad Astra. Moreover, we had conducted a presentation to all of the high school teachers during the faculty meeting and during STEM club meeting for further research and addressing the importance of the project and the competition.

ART DESIGN

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS:

Assistant Professor Dr. Maliwan Nakkuntod

Assistant Professor Dr. Maliwan Nakkuntod is a faculty in the Department of Biology, Faculty of Science at Naresuan University, Phitsanulok, Thailand. Her expertise is in the field of Plant Biology, Plant Molecular Biology, Plant Systematics, and Plant Biotechnology. This project could not be accomplished without the help of Dr Nakkuntod. She sacrificed her time to supervise us and guide us. She provided us with laboratory space and equipment. Furthermore, 3 of her undergraduate students, Sunisa Luanglue, Piyamongkol Mangkalasane, and Phirawat Apichatsuksun also guide us throughout the wet lab procedure.

Sunisa Luanglue, Piyamongkol Mangkalasane, Phirawat Apichatsuksun

Sunisa Luanglue, Piyamongkol Mangkalasane, and Phirawat Apichatsuksun are studying in the Faculty of Science at Naresuan University. They all are students of Assistant Professor Dr. Maliwan Nakkuntod. They devoted their time to guide us throughout the lab; took care of us both inside and outside the lab.

Julian Zhao

Julian Zhao is an experienced iGEM advisor, who was assigned to our team to guide us through the project. He provided us with helpful and purposeful thoughts, tips, and questions to consider in order to be successful with our project. Unfortunately, it is inconvenient to us and to him to meet by a person, therefore we contact each other via social media; we could still cooperate and express ideas efficiently.

Dr.Puey Ounjai

Dr.Puey Ounjai is a faculty in the Department of Molecular Biology, Faculty of Science at Mahidol University. His expertise was Mechanism of Ciliary Transport, Mechanism of Ciliary Transport, Architecture of Ciliary Components, and Structural Biology of Membrane Proteins. He is one of our important project design advisors who guided us at the beginning of our project.

Mr.Sean Fisk

Mr.Sean Fisk is a Chemistry teacher at Ruamrudee International School. He is our Primary PI and has helped support us and guide us through the process of designing our project and has been constantly challenging us to improve ourselves and think of ways to make this project impact more people.

Ms.Nicole Sabet

Ms. Nicole Sabet is a Biology and Chemistry teacher at Ruamrudee International School. She is our Secondary PI and has helped us with organizing our project and guiding us with the process of sending out grants to companies in Thailand.

Mr.Pairoth Ardyamsroun

Mr. Pairoth Ardyamsroun is an experienced website developer of the Siam Commercial Bank. He assists us on the wiki construction and design.
