Team:BNU-China/Safety

Overview

BNU-China paid numerous attentions to safety, throughout lab, human and environment. We offered comprehensive safety training to every team member before getting down to experiments. Biosafety was also considered when we design our project, which was ensured by organism choosing and introduced safety modules to engineered microbe.

Safety Training in Lab

Instructors of BNU-China and previous team members provided us a seires of safety training for months, ensuring everyone understand the importance of lab safety and keep all regulations in mind.

As soon as we recruited our team, members of BNU-China 2018 taught us rules supposed to obey in lab and experimental skills in theory. After three-month primary training, we were tested to select qualified members. Then our instructors communicated with us once a week to provided suggestions on our constant safety training. Xiaoran Hao, secondary PI, gave us lectures about how to avoid risks and increase success rate.

Before entering the laboratory, all of us seriously read and signed laboratory safety responsibility book. Strictly complying detailed standards, we accepted several experimental trainings under the mentor of advisor Yang Miao and student leader Zhe Feng. After ensuring everyone to be familiar with protocols, we started our project officially.

Experiment Safety

As the project progressing, we stuck to the regulations in the supervision of instructors and PI. Xiaoran Hao, who had experience in laboratory management for years, helped us screen for potential safety hazards and keep lab in order. She also taught us molecular cloning technique, how to use fluorescence microscope and ways of keeping us safe, such as wearing laboratory clothes, gloves, goggles and other protective equipment in strict accordance with relevant regulations. Food is forbidden to bring into the experimental area to ensure the safety of each of our team members during the experiment.

Organism Safety

All strains we used in our project is strictly chosen and belong to Risk Group 1, which do no harm to the human body or environment. Laboratory wastes are uniformly treated by professional institute, preventing risks to the environment.
