Safe Project Design

The main safety feature that our project included is the used E. coli cell line. Since it is genetically modified, we produced GM-waste during our wet lab work. This is something we had to consider when we tried to find a laboratory space to use.

Something we also considered was an additional test at the end of our lab work. We originally planned to demonstrate our idea with immunoassay that can detect dengue virus. For the test we decided to use a non-pathogenic protein of the dengue virus as the analyte. That way there would be a significantly lower risk of harmful effects. However due to time constraints this test was not carried out.

Safe Lab Work

All our team members who worked in the lab had a proper safety training beforehand. In the lab we followed all the essential safety rules. Everyone in the lab wore proper lab attire, that is lab coats, gloves and safety goggles when needed. We washed our hands often so there would be minimal contamination. All our equipment and the chemicals we used were handled with care, but if a mess was made it was cleaned up immediately. There was no eating or drinking in the lab. All the waste we produced was disposed of properly.
