Thank you to everyone who participated in the 2019 season of the International Genetically Engineered Machine Competition.
Undergraduate Grand Prize Winner
NCKU Tainan
This team from the National Cheng Kung University for developed a comprehensive approach to chronic kidney disease, including biological systems for measuring blood p-Cresol levels and reducing p-Cresol production in the gut.
Overgraduate Grand Prize Winner
EPFL
This team from Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne introduced a field-deployable test enabling farmers to detect fatal plant diseases and save crop loss, while reducing pesticide use.
High School Grand Prize Winner
GreatBay SZ
This team of students from various HIgh Schools in the Shenzhen area biosynthesized colored spider silk, a material with applications in medicine, textiles, and aerospace fields.
Undergraduate First Runner Up
Calgary
This team from the University of Calgary engineered a biological system to replace current environmentally-detrimental methods for removing excess chlorophyll from canola oil.
Undergraduate Second Runner Up
TU Kaiserslautern
This undergraduate team from Technische Universität Kaiserslautern created a biological recycling method for polyethylene terephthalate (PET), a major plastic component, integrated within waste management and water treatment centers to eliminate plastic pollution.
Overgraduate First Runner Up
Wageningen UR
This team from Wageningen University & Research developed a biological solution for Xylella fastidiosa, a devastating plant pathogen threatening olive trees, grapevines and other host plants, and causing environmental and economic damage across Europe.
