NoxCycler

Abstract

Nitrous oxide (N2O) is one of the major greenhouse gases emitted due to the decomposition of chemical fertilizers used in agriculture. The N2O has an impact almost 300 times greater than carbon dioxide and persists for up to 114 years in the atmosphere. Noxcycler is a synthetic biology project that intends to use bacteria to diagnose the presence of nitrate and nitric oxide in the soil, indirectly detecting the conversion of these compounds into N2O.

Schema

  • First Step

Confirm the functionality of our genetic circuit for detection of NO and NO3-

  • Second Step

Apply the biosensor in plant growth promoting bacteria, so that (N2O) is reduced to (N2), followed to its conversion to NH4, to be possible its use by the plants

  • Third Step

Test results and analyze the output by gas chromatography
