Our Team
Our Team
Our team members are all students from The Stony Brook School. As our school slogan "Character Before Career" insists, our team thrives to reach for an inspiring and free team spirit for everyone to shape the experiment with their own characters. All the experiments, lectures and surveys are designed by the team members themselves with only necessary help from the instructors. Hope you like our metal hunter - the heavy metal pollution detector!
Wensan Yin
Hi, I am Wensan Yin, a senior at the Stony Brook School and a second year iGEMer. Long fascinated by the nature of life, I love biology for its ability to unveil the molecular mechanism behind lots of life's traits. As the team captain, my role is not to always make arbitrary decisions but to discuss with everyone how to carry out the project in a productive and meaningful way. I give my suggestions on how to allow each part of dry and wet lab to contribute to our metal-hunting goal. My biggest hope for the team is that everyone on it can grow in both intellect and character.
Agnes Zhou
Hey! I'm Agnes Zhou, a senior and second-year member of the team from the Stony Brook School! I am mainly working on the dry team, taking care of all the surveys, lectures, professor coordinations and online Wechat Offcial Account running. I am very glad to be able to work with these amazing colleagues a second time and produce this amazing equipment for handling emergency situations, which became more and more frequent and common as science develop in such a fast speed. All the tears and struggles along our way turned out to be these amazing memories as we reach our final result and realize that we are really able to save a lot of people with our own hands! Hope you like our hero: the Metal Hunter!
Candy Zhou
Hi, I’ m Yinchi(Candy) Zhou, a senior from The Stony Brook School on Long Island. Currently, I am a member of the wet group, which focuses on experiments and results. I spent the whole summer working on our biological project with my schoolmates. I found iGEM inspiring me on science. It not only elevated my academic ability but also taught me cooperation skills. Investigating and doing research are challenging for a high school student. We definitely struggled a lot, but we made it eventually. I eventually realize that biology is not a simple subject: it relates to social science, economy, engineer, etc, which have significant impacts on our life. I appreciate this amazing experience!
Martin Cheng
Hello, my name is Qishuo, Cheng. I am currently a junior from The Stony Brook School on Long Island. As one of the numbers of the team SBS_NY, I mainly focus on experiments, such as processing genes and testing our hypothesis. I have had a long history of associating with biology. Learning biology for more than five years, I did experiments in Cornell University, was an assistant of a biology professor at Peking University, and organized several philanthropic activities among America, France, and China. Participating IGEM this year, I take a further step on my learning road of biology. I really appreciate this opportunity, and hope to utilize this program to contribute to our community, even the world.
Ruize Gao
Hello, I am Ruize Gao, a senior of the Stony Brook School. I am the mathematical modeler of the team. I job is to establish the mathematical mechanism of our product through hypothesizing and data processing. The mechanism is applied to the software program of our final product. The software processes the reading from the sensor and yields the reflection of the reading, which is, in our case, the concentration of heavy metal pollution. Besides mathematical modeling, I took part in consulting some experts on environmental science as well. Although this is my first time participating in iGEM, I have found great inspiration from the contest. Being the most comprehensive contest I have taken part in so far, iGEM shows me how math can be applied to real world problems in diverse ways.
Ella Liu
Hi! My name is Zijun Liu. I am a junior from the Stony Brook School on Long Island, New York. This is the first time for me to participate in an iGem project. This year I have involved in several parts of our project. I have participated in laboratory works like transforming the bacteria, but my major role in this team is to run the human practice part of this project. I have interviewed a professor with my teammates to investigate the prospect of our project in Shanghai. Also, I have sent out surveys in the commmunity to learn about the extent of public awareness of heavy metal pollution in soil.I have organized and conducted on-the-spot investigations to test heavy metal concentration in different areas. After we got our result of the experiment, I helped our team to hold a lecture in the public in order to publicize our method. My experience in this project really helped me learn more about Biology and realize the importance of cooperation. I am so thankful for everyone on the team as we have made great efforts to this project and achieved our goal.
Ellen Tong
Hi! My name is Ellen. I am currently studying at The Stony Brook School on Long Island, New York as a high school junior. I have taken several science courses yet I found biology the most intriguing. I do not have as much experience as most people who are participating in doing this project. Therefore, I participated in the 2019 iGEM in order to learn more about synthetic biology and genetic engineering. This year, I am the coordinator of the team: I make sure that everyone involved in this project is on the same page, which means contacting laboratories and seeking collaborations, etc. I did background research at the beginning stage of our project, too, and helped writing the experiment part of our wiki at the end. We have struggled along the way, but we worked together and made it thus far - I really enjoy working with my teammates and am excited to see how the rest of our project goes.
Ava Zhang
Hi!This is Ava. I am currently a high school sophomore at the Stony Brook School, NY. I have long been interested in Bioengineering, but this is my first time participating in iGEm. In our team, I majorly work in lab. I did parts of the research work and I participated during the amplification and insertion of our target genes. I also helped with the construction of team wiki; I was in charge of writing project overview and helped with visualization. Though it has been a lot of hard work and struggles, I did gain growth in both knowledge and understanding by working with our amazing team. This is a great starting point – I am more than excited to see where it would go.
