Mission Statement

Mission Statement

An ever-growing human population, increasingly globalised international communities and the prominence of anti-vaccination trends puts the world at risk of opportunistic communicable diseases. Volatect combines cutting-edge engineering technology with innovative biology research to provide the world with comprehensive bioengineering solutions to combat global challenges such as disease outbreak pandemics. We research and develop seamless tools and systems that bring together effective and ethical products, with creativity and practicality at the forefront of our ethos.

NYUAD iGEM

Since 2015, NYUAD has been an eager and excited participant at the iGEM jamboree. Beginning with the Exterminator Coli self-sustaining mosquito trap, then moving on to shiga-like toxin detection using PAGE gels with Prokary-eat, finally in 2017 we moved onto our current theme of pathogen detection using novel DNA amplification techniques. E.coLAMP was the first project using PDMS chips with LAMP reagents to detect E.coli, eventually developing into Pathogene which encompassed a sample collection and heating device, radial chip for multiplex detection using LAMP and RPA reagents and now culminating into Volatect. Currently, with over 5 years of experience, a wealth of knowledge, supportive mentors, strong partnerships and collaborations, the NYUAD iGEM team is confident in continuing a culture of excellence.

Beyond iGEM

We believe that iGEM is a great resource, platform and inspiration for our projects, however it is by far not the conclusion of our research and ideas. The projects that we present are truly research, devices and systems that we believe have the potential to be applicable to life outside of a lab and the giant jamboree. Therefore as our teams conclude our work for the 2019 iGEM season we plan to refine our experiments, optimise our reagents and begin to think about the steps we can take towards making our products a reality. We encourage all teams to recognise and take advantage of the iGEM competition but also to think beyond iGEM and realise the value of their hard work, the significance of their research and potential of their ideas.
