2019 was a new year for the Amazon team. After a year without iGEM, the team has been revamped to become the most numerous and diverse we've ever had. We are a total of 15 members, 3 advisors, 2 Instructors and 2 PI from various fields including Physics, Software Engineering, Biomedicine, Medicine, Pharmaceutical Sciences, High School and Biotechnology. It was from this multidisciplinarity that BeliE.V.E emerged, after several brainstorming, excitement, mistakes and successes.
Jimmy Hayden Linhares - Team leader. Responsible to be the bridge between the primary instructors and the team. Contributed to the conception of the idea of the project. Planned and executed the Integrated Human Practices. Designed and improved the synthetic genetic circuit design. Worked with administration and at the lab.
Gabriel Borel - Worked at lab, doing PCR and Nissle 1917 culture. He was the public relations leader, dealing with every aspect of it, giving lectures, contacting sponsors, giving interviews and doing paperwork.
Joseana Comodaro - As the only student who had previous iGEM lab experience, Joseana not only worked at the lab, but also was a support for the other members. doing electrocompetent Nissle 1917, testing the Lactate and Hypoxia sensors and dealing with general lab work.
Maria Cecília Lelis - Ceci dealt with all parts of lab work, culturing Nissle 1917, cloning the secretion system, doing most of the tests necessary and became Isabelle's trainee in proteomics. Helped with public relations, collab team, gave lectures and interviews.
Thiago de Lima - He worked at the AND GATE module and doing general lab work as Joseana’s and Cecília right arm. Also worked at our social media and public engagement.
Franklin Neto - He was an important part of the genetic circuit design team. Worked with general lab work.
Igor Fernandes - Sole handled modeling, working at all parts of our model and helped in developing and handling our wiki.
Gabriel Camargo - Hardware and Collab Leader. Constructed and designed the hardware of our team, helped with public relations in writing texts, contacting foreign teams and doing paperwork.
Livia Takahashi - Wiki leader. Developed, constructed and designed our wiki and worked to form the BeliEVE project. Worked in public relations in writing texts and giving lectures.
Abel de Andrade, Victor dos Santos, Nathália Fernandes and Gabriel Peron - were our dedicated apprentices. As they entered our iGEM team this year, they didn’t know a lot about the competition but as time passed they understood the different dynamics and adapted to it, spending all day in the lab helping with experiments. Besides helping the lab team they were essential in other functions like public relations, human practices and reviewing texts to put on our wiki.
Leticia Pinheiro - Human Practices leader. She was vital to design ReThink and in every aspect our Human Practices. Acted giving lectures, interviewing and conducting all of our HP activities. Also, she helped with the drawings and design of our wiki.
Kathelen Memória - Worked at Human Practices, worked with ReThink and giving lectures.
What would be our team without our PIs? Probably a bunch of lost students running around with their hands full. Without Prof. Spartaco deep and unending knowledge about Lab work, disaster would have struck our project several times more. And without Prof. Lorena, there wouldn’t even be a project to be struck, without her help with paperwork, team organization, meetings, and Lab Work, all hope would have been lost.
Instructor play a much important role in every project, with both theoretical and practical knowledge they made miracles in the lab and opened our minds for new ideas and solutions.
Being the unofficial mother of the team, Giovanna has gone above and beyond for our project to work, dealing with all teams and all members and always urging us to do our best always. She was the one who planted the seed of working with cancer in 2019’s iGEM, then we decided to follow the oncology research path because of her particular interest in it.
Isaac was our supreme jack of all trades. He helped to conceive the idea of BeliEVE from its beginning to its end and also implementing it. He also gave support to the Wiki team. We are very grateful for his help and dedication - and calmness.
Both of them were the foundation for the genetic circuit design team. And both of them lost a lot of hair with us (we’re sorry!).
Our cloning would’ve been lost without Diego’s help and his unorthodox techniques, which extends to every aspect of lab work.
Isabelle’s help was as much moral as practical, cheering us up when we were down and training our members in proteomics lab work.
Sônia, called informally by most students as Queen Sônia, helped us in navigating the endless amount of paperwork necessary to do top-notch science.
We would like to thanks all of our sponsors, because, without them, we could never achieve anything! Firstly we would like to thank the Federal University of Amazonas (UFAM). We would like to offer special thanks to Congressman Luiz Castro, the Foundation of Research Support in Amazonas (FAPEAM) and The government of State of Amazonas for funding our project and our travel to the Giant Jamboree.
From IDT and Twist, we received extremely important support: The sequences needed to power up BeliEVE and making our entire project possible. Cellco also had helped us with donations of reagents, Cristalia has helped us by donating money for reagents and our travel expenses and Institute Serrapilheira for paying for our accommodations in Boston for the Giant Jamboree.
We would like to thank Benchling for their Free Software, which deeply helped us design and model our circuit.
We thank Oncoclin for sponsoring our public engagement project, ReThink and Sumauma Mall for giving us a place to expose our project.
And last, but not least, we would like to thank all of our 35 sponsors who donated in our funding campaign.
The following people and institutions helped us greatly in different aspects of our project, we are very grateful for their help.
We are grateful to everyone in the Multidisciplinary Support Center (CAM) and users of Building G for their help through lab work. And again, we would like to thanks UFAM for giving us full access to their facilities, The University Center and Metropolitan College of Manaus (UNIFAMETRO) and The Federal Institute of Education, Science, and Technology of Amazonas (IFAM).
We thank everyone in the Integrated Activities Hub (NAI) for their help in making ReThink possible especially Profesor Rosana Moyses for helping to coordinate our activities, Igor Alves for making our video and Gerferson Furtado França’s design for the photographic exposition. We also thanks Juliana Viana and Gabriela de Sousa for presenting us to the NAI and to professor Rosana and for their help with ReThink
