Team:Alabama/Safety

Any work with the drugs was done in a contained area in the lab and only in the Class II Type A2 biological safety cabinet (BSC). The area around the BSC was sectioned off in order to discourage other members of the lab unaffiliated with the project to enter the "drug area" of the lab. All members entering the BSC must be fully gowned in PPE and be sterilized with ethanol. Proper waste stream was defined through EH&S.

There was no inhalation risk from the drug because it was shipped to the team in a 20% solution in DMSO. Any solution containing the drug was not allowed to evaporate fully and stored in proper liquid waste containers.

The team lead received a blood test through Minnesota Department of Labor in December 2018 (prior to starting the current project) and will receive another blood test between September & December 2019 to monitor liver function.
Only non-pathogenic strains of bacteria will be used for any experiments.
Needles used for HPLC prep are disposed of in appropriate sharps container and only new, sterile needles were used. Team members were trained in needle safety prior to working with them to mitigate stick risk.
