Collaborations

Collaborating Teams: iGEM Athens, iGEM Madrid, iGEM Pasteur-Paris, iGEM Rotterdam, iGEM Strasbourg, iGEM BOKU-Vienna, iGEM Cornell, iGEM CSMU Taiwan, iGEM DUT China A

While doing our research for our project, we many times wished for there to be a more formal platform for anybody working with aptamers to be able to share ideas, advice and feedback.

The iGEM Aptamers Hub started as a collaboration between 9 different teams working on aptamers. The purpose of the Hub is to encourage the use of aptamers during the iGEM competition and enable more researchers to pursue aptamers as research tools. This Hub serves as a place for anyone to find resources on aptamers and their uses, but also useful information regarding laboratory techniques and computational tools in order to facilitate teams and researchers to use aptamers in their projects. This was from the beginning a collaborative endeavour and we held group discussions through Skype and WhatsApp in order to decide on important issues concerning the Hub’s organization and function. On our vision for the future, we wish to see the Aptamers Hub grow further with more teams joining it. Other plans include getting in touch and engaging other people, outside the iGEM family, such as scientists, researchers and entrepreneurs! Finally, we have proposed the creation of an Aptamers Hub website, which will serve as an excellent database of contact information of the Hub’s members, supporters and collaborators, of useful resources etc! The Aptamers Hub can be accessed through: https://aptamershub.wordpress.com . We have contributed to the Hub through the meetings, the creation of the website, the creation of a database with computational tools for aptamer research.

Other Collaborations

Experimental

iGEM UPNA
We sent land and water samples from Athens so that the team can test the detection of heavy metals like mercury, copper, lead and arsenic in them.

iGEM Thessaloniki
One of our main pillars of our Human Practices, and our Project in general, was safety, and, specifically, how to ensure safety for everyone, from experienced researchers to new scientists. We aimed to create a self-assessment safety checklist comprising of both biosecurity and bioethics issues. Therefore we were delighted to learn that iGEM Thessaloniki was also working on a whole assessment mechanism for institutional and organizational use. This is why we decided to combine our efforts, by providing fruitful commentary on each other’s questionnaire as well as offering both questionnaires on our wikis, since together they guarantee a high level of security for prospective teams. You can contact any member of the two teams to find out more about safety and how to promote it in your laboratory workplace!

iGEM Thessaly
Team Thessaly was in need of betaine and we gladly helped by sending them some via mail.

Facebook

Technion
| One Minute Video Challenge | Team Technion challenged iGEM Teams to create a one minute video summarizing and explaining their projects, which was then posted and shared on Facebook. Watch our one-minute video below!

Instagram Challenges

Nowadays Instagram is one of the most popular social media platforms for iGEM Teams to present their project process and interact with a wider audience.

Stony Brook
| iGEM Instagram Challenge | The Stony Brook team through this 7-day Instagram challenge promoted the work of a lot of teams in a fun way and also strengthened the idea that all teams work together for the same reason , synthetic biology.

Costa Rica, Tuebingen, and TAS Taipei
| iGEMxSDGs challenge | We participated in this Instagram challenge in order to promote the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations through our project.

Art Collaborations

Art is inarguably an effective way to promote science, team spirit and educate people.

Nantes
| iGEM Art Exposition | The Nantes Team organized an iGEM art exposition and we couldn’t be happier to contribute to it by creating a collage art regarding synthetic biology. Below, you can see our work of art, which we titled "Sticky Ends" ;)
