Overgraduate Grand Prize Winner

EPFL

This team from Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne introduced a field-deployable test enabling farmers to detect fatal plant diseases and save crop loss, while reducing pesticide use.

High School Grand Prize Winner

GreatBay SZ

This team of students from various HIgh Schools in the Shenzhen area biosynthesized colored spider silk, a material with applications in medicine, textiles, and aerospace fields.

Undergraduate First Runner Up

Calgary

Canada, the largest producer and exporter of canola oil in the world is faced by the "green seed problem", an issue that costs the Canadian canola oil industry $150m every year. This team from the University of Calgary engineered a biological solution that would improve the canola oil production pipeline at every step, making the whole system more environmentally friendly, and yield more high-quality product.

Undergraduate Second Runner Up

TU Kaiserslautern

This undergraduate team from Technische Universität Kaiserslautern created a biological recycling method for polyethylene terephthalate (PET), a major plastic component, integrated within waste management and water treatment centers to eliminate plastic pollution.

Overgraduate First Runner Up

Wageningen UR

This team from Wageningen University & Research developed a biological solution for Xylella fastidiosa, a devastating plant pathogen threatening olive trees, grapevines and other host plants, and causing environmental and economic damage across Europe.
