Team Collaborations
The Medal Requirements now include team collaborations as a silver medal requirement. To help facilitate collaborations, we have made this page so teams can share information about ways they wish to collaborate to reach all of the 2019 iGEM teams.
Please note that this is a page for teams to advertise their collaboration requests. This does not guarantee that participating in one of these will fulfill the silver medal criteria. It is still up to you and your teammates to convince the judges that you have participated in a meaningful collaboration as stated on the Medal Requirements page.
Do you want to promote a Collaboration Request?
Send us your request by email: hq AT igem DOT org .
Please include:
- Name of Collaboration Request
- Your Team Name
- Your Team Location (Institution and Country)
- Your contact information - Contact Name and Email (to be posted online)
- Brief Collaboration Request description. This can be something that you can offer other teams or something that you are looking for from another team(s).

Team: CUNY Kingsborough
Team Location: CUNY Kingsborough Community College, NY, USA
Contact Information: Amy Yang - Amy.Yang35 [AT] myhunter.cuny.edu
Description:
My name is Amy and I am the Modeling and Design Team Leader from the CUNY Kingsborough iGEM team. We are currently under the Open Track. Our goal this year is to better characterize a DNA quantification protocol through the use of EtBr. We hope the protocol will help future teams with limited resources to be able to complete their projects. In order to do this, we are seeking to collaborate with other teams to collect the necessary data - the more data we have the better we can characterize the results from this protocol. If your team has access to EtBr, we would greatly appreciate if you could prepare samples of DNA of varying concentrations of your choice (for instance 0.5 ng/µl) and a 1 µg/mL dilution of EtBr (for the amount of EtBr needed, multiple the amount of samples of DNA you will have by 12 uL). We would prefer a DNA concentration of less than 31.25 ng/uL if possible. Then, create a spot by adding 1 uL of the diluted DNA to 9 uL of diluted EtBr -- for a total of 10 uL per spot (see attached picture for example). After mixing each sample well, please shine the spot with UV light (you could use a lamp or spectrophotometer) for at least a minute, and send us the images with the concentration of each spot attached. We would like at least five samples -- with the more the better. Feel free to email us with any questions. Please let us know as soon as possible if you can do this, and it would be great if you could also spread the word to any collaborators with whom you may work with.

58. Characterization of BioBrick composite parts
Team: Valencia_UPV
Team Location: Valencia, Universitat Politècnica de València
Contact Information: igem.upv.2019 [at] gmail.com
Description:
Hey iGEM-ers!
This year our team is working so hard on the characterization of several transcriptional units assembled with the Golden Braid Grammar. However, we would like to compare these assemblies with the same ones resulted from using the BioBrick method. As almost all DNA parts we are using are already present in the Registry of Standard Biological Parts (common pieces such as the BBa_B0015 terminator, promoters from the Anderson collection, RBS from the common collection and reporters like the sfGFP or the mRFP), we think some of you might have assembled them with BioBrick during your projects. Here’s a table with the pieces we are currently using. We are interested in any combination of these parts.
Thus, if you have any transcriptional unit combining some of our promoters, CDS, RBS and terminator, you can easily help us sending it to us so we can characterize and compare that composite part with ours.
Good luck, we are looking forward to seeing you all in Boston!
Valencia_UPV
57. iGEM 2019 Science/Art Photo Contest
Team: EPFL
Team Location:EPFL, Switzerland
Contact Information: Violette Zanotti, violette.zanotti [at] epfl.ch
Description:
Bring Science Out of Your Lab!
This year, the EPFL iGEM team would like to give the opportunity to iGEMers from all over the world to compete on a new level… Art!
We know that you are all stuck in your labs until the competition, therefore we will make it easier for you: the contest is about artistic images from your experiments!
Indeed we are convinced that art is a domain in which people from all backgrounds can appreciate. This is therefore a way for us to open the dialog about our project and more broadly, about synthetic biology with the public.
The rules are simple: each team is allowed to submit maximum 3 images of their choice before the 21th of September 2019 23:59 CEST (Central European Summer Time) in this google form:
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSf0CYXTy5rG6DbH5u2XoasOCgqH31_PnGyyhI3FBX1sIz_MVg/viewform?usp=pp_url
The best images will be carefully
selected by our team and displayed during an exposition in Lausanne. We will base our choice on the following criterion: how well does the image combine art and science?
As we do not want to discriminate teams which may not have access to high quality equipment to take photos, we do not put a minimum resolution. But please keep in mind that we will only be able to print images of a high enough resolution, so please take your photos with the best resolution you can !
We will of course offer a prize to the 3 teams that impressed us the most. We will keep secret what it is until the Giant Jamboree… See you all in Boston!!
(You need a google account in order to submit a file. If you do not have one, please let us know per email at violette.zanotti [at] epfl.ch)

49. Help us Build Our Promoter Tool
Team: Manchester
Team Location: University of Manchester, United Kingdom
Contact Information: Ed Deshmukh-Reeves / manchesterigemteam2019 [AT] gmail.com
Description:
This year we are designing a biosensor for Listeria monocytogenes in soft cheese starter cultures. As part of our project we want to build a toolkit of promoter sequences suitable for both E. coli and L. lactis and we are currently designing a predictive model to simulate promoter strength based on conserved features. Working on this tool with us is a great way to tick your silver medal collaboration criteria. We would love to work with any teams who have any new promoter sequences that they are planning on submitting to the registry, so that we can build this tool together. If this sounds like something your team would be interested in, please send us the following information:
We will definitely require:
- The sequence of the promoter(s) you wish to add to the iGEM toolkit
- Which bacterial species (one, two or many) you would like to optimise this promoter sequence for
It would be useful (but not compulsory) to send us:
- A bacterial species for which this promoter has been characterised already, either in a publication (please include a reference) or by you as part of your project
- The associated activity for this promoter or your intentions for the promoters strength (e.g., low, medium or high relative expression levels)
What you will get from us:
- Predicted relative promoter strength data, and possibly helpful suggestions how to further optimise the promoter sequences (if our tool works)
- A clear-cut opportunity to meet the requirements for a silver medal collaboration
We look forward to working with you.

45. Team Communication and Issues Survey
Team: Imperial College
Team Location: London, United Kingdom
Contact Information: official.imperial.igem [at] gmail.com
Description:
Dear fellow iGEMers,
We need your help. We’re sure that during the progression of the project, you have come to understand how crucial communication is for members within a team, and the lack of can be detrimental to the team and result in reduced efficiency, productivity, and most importantly affecting the wellbeing of the team members.
We had our challenges when it came to getting along and tensions were high, but we have come a long way since then and we have decided that we do not want anything like that to happen again, not just for ourselves but for all.
We have decided to develop an app that allows every member of the team an equal opportunity to voice their opinions and concerns. In order to design our app and ensure its effectiveness, we need help from the iGEM community. We have designed this survey on google poll for individual team members to fill out; the aim of this survey is to understand what difficulties other teams have faced (or may still be going through) when it comes to team communication. We understand that the topic we wish to discuss is sensitive by its nature, but we assure you that we will maintain as much anonymity as possible. The survey has been designed to not record any personal or institute names. We will only be using this survey to get an idea of what content to include in our app, we will not be using it for any other purpose.
Our only aim with this project is to further our understanding of issues faced by teams and design tools to help deal with them.
Here is the link to our Google survey:
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScj_2MJxT28Ta5bpP6KbsO-9dsiG4U4nq9GBq3tIVWi9tWbLw/viewform?usp=sf_link
Along the same lines of communication, we have also designed a science communication guideline, as another issue that we see in our field is inconsistency when it comes to sharing information with non-scientists and the general public. To help scientist tackle this, we have designed this interactive guide, which is still in its early phase, but we would appreciate any feedback that you could give us on its usefulness and any ways that we could improve it.
If you were to fill out the survey or use the communication guide, please do let us know so that we can add you to our collaborations page and link your wiki to ours.
We look forward to hearing from you.
Lots of iGEM love,
Team Imperial

Contact Information: Bhaskar Kumawat
kbhaskar [AT] iisc.ac.in
iisc.igem2019 [AT] gmail.com
Description:
As a team working with phages for the first time, we are realizing that there are a lot of things that need to be taken into account when doing so. A significant portion of our phage team's efforts went into troubleshooting and resolving issues with very common experiments (like the plaque assay). To ensure that no future teams face similar problems, we are working on a brief list of commandments for phage work that we think every team should necessarily practice. As such, we request all the teams who have previously worked (or are currently working) with phages to send us tips and enhancements to phage protocols that they've used. This list of suggestions will be compiled into a single point resources for all iGEM teams in the future.
There's no set deadline for this collaboration because we can keep on adding new things to the primer, but we'll suggest you send in your submissions by 31st August.
See you at the Jamboree!

36. Cancer Relapse Detection - CRISPR-Cas12a (Cpf1) for point-of-care Implementation
Team: EPFL
Team Location: Lausanne, Switzerland
Contact Information: Samuel Gomez, e-mail: samuel.gomez [AT] epfl.ch
Description:
Our team is focused on the development of a new therapeutic approach to target melanoma cancer using immunotherapy method, with a focus on vaccines. Furthermore, the project aims to integrate personalised medicine approaches, including a non-invasive follow-up assay that targets miRNA and circulating-tumour DNA (ctDNA fragments from the cancer cells that circulate in the blood) as biomarkers for relapse detection.
One of our goals is develop our detection scheme into a portable point-of-care assay. We would also like to collaborate on increasing sensitivity and specificity of our detection assay and to compare with other methods of detection that use CRISPR-Cas12a. We are also working on the possibility of a quantitative colorimetric scheme ( for Cas13a as well ) that will replace fluorescent readouts in order to quantify the amount of ctDNA we have in the blood. In addition to this, we are interested in teams that are developing better storage conditions for CRISPR-Cas12a as well as teams that have experience with product (kit) development ( and 3D printers ) as are working on the possibility of developing a kit for our assay, including the step of ctDNA isolation from blood/plasma/serum.
We would be open to collaborate with teams that are working on any of these aspects of our project in any way possible. We wish all teams the best of luck in their endeavours. See you guys in Boston!
35. Cancer Relapse Detection - CRISPR-Cas12a (Cpf1) and Dumbbell Probes (Rolling Circle Amplification)
We aim to use CRISPR-Cas12a to detect chromosomal rearrangements in ctDNA (a unique sequence of ctDNA specific to the cancer cells of approximately 60-bp). We are looking for collaborations with teams that are working with, or have previously worked with CRISPR-Cas12a or Cas13a to detect mutations or genetic sequences, as well as experience in producing and purifying this protein.
Another very important biomarker for cancer relapse is miRNA. We are designing dumbbell probes in order to perform rolling circle amplification of miRNA, we are also working on the development of a script to simplify these probe designs from miRNA, and the detection will also be using CRISPR-Cas12a proteins.
We would be open to collaborate with teams that are working on any of these aspects of our project in any way possible. We wish all teams the best of luck in their endeavours. See you guys in Boston!

31. Recombination Strategies
Team: UConn
Team Location: University of Connecticut, Connecticut, USA
Contact Information: uconnigem [at] gmail.com
Description:
This year, our team is interested in “knocking out” certain genes from the genome of E. coli but initially struggled with finding a way to do so. We began to look into recombineering; we’d heard of CRISPR through science news and past Jamborees and recognized lambda-red recombineering from reading past wikis, but we were unsure how to design recombineering experiments ourselves. We’ve done a lot of reading to plan the experiments for our lambda-red recombineering knockouts, and we wanted to know how your team approached recombination and the outcomes of your efforts.
Our team is interested in collaborating to put together a guide to recombination strategies in E. coli, similar to what TU Eindhoven did in 2015 for cloning (https://2015.igem.org/wiki/images/9/9a/TU_Eindhoven_The_Cloning_Guide.pdf), and we need your help! We have made a set of questions to facilitate discussion about the recombineering system that you used, and we will compile them to make one cohesive guide.
If you’re interested in participating, send us an email and we’ll get you the questions. Looking forward to collaborating with you!

In 2017, we created a blog called Think of the PLOSibilities which posts weekly summaries of open access journals, such as Public Library of Science (PLOS), without heavy scientific jargon. We would love to feature a diverse range of scientific subjects and have representation from scientific communities around the world! If your team is interested in contributing to the blog and submitting your own summary, you can find the steps to submit a summary here: https://plosibilities.wordpress.com/how-to-submit-a-summary and you can find previous postings here: https://plosibilities.wordpress.com/blog/. We look forward to reading your submissions!
Thank you and best of luck with the rest of the season!

8. Sharing FACS beads for Interlab
Team: Ruia-Mumbai
Team Location: Ramnarain Ruia Autonomous College, Mumbai, India
Contact Information: Anjali Vaidya, catechewingcoli [AT] gmail.com
Description:
Dear fellow iGEMers,
The Interlab study for this year's competition has an EXTRA credit component if teams are able to perform FACS analysis alongside the 96-well plate readings. The teams who perform the FACS will get a special mention in the resulting publication.
Although we have access to a FACS machine, we don't have the specific calibration beads that iGEM requires us to use.
Would any team be interested in splitting the cost of the Rainbow calibration beads (type RCP-30-5A or URCP-38-2K) with us? You only need a few drops to run the calibration so there should be more than enough left from the 5ml pack. Alternatively, if you have the beads and are willing to ship a small aliquot to us, we would be happy to officially list you as a collaborator for this part of the work.
Please let us know if your team is interested in such a collaboration for the FACS module of the Interlab study. Good luck to all team and we look forward to seeing you at the Jamboree!
Cheers,
Team Ruia-Mumbai

4. Fighting Stigma Against Synthetic Biology!
Team: Harvard
Team Location: Harvard University, United States
Contact Information: Jessica DeVilla, Aaron Hodges, Fay Huo, Nathan Sharp, Mark Meneses, and Tajrean Yeana.
Email: higemteam2019 [AT] gmail.com
Description:
Hi everyone,
Calling all iGEM teams! This year, Team Harvard wants to work with you all to end the stigma against synthetic biology. We’ve noticed that human contact with bacteria is frequently associated with negative consequences and as such, it is regarded as dangerous by the general public. As iGEM teams, we understand that genetically engineering bacteria is a largely untapped resource for positive change. Help us show the world the true potential of harnessing bacteria for use in therapeutics, diagnostics, the environment and more!
We plan to release a series of newsletters and articles to showcase all of the cool things teams are doing with bacteria for their projects. We’d love to feature your work in our series! If you’d like to participate, please email a description of your project and if possible, a photo to go along with it to higemteam2019 [AT] gmail.com. The more teams that we hear back from the better! Just a couple minutes of your time could make a big difference in our community.
We look forward to hearing from you and wish you all good luck with your projects!
Warm regards,
The 2019 Harvard iGEM Team

2. Science Sketch
Team: NYU Abu Dhabi
Team Location: New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD), Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE)
Contact Information: Laura Karpauskaite and Doovaraha Maheswarasarma, nyuad.igem [AT] nyu.edu
Description:
Dear iGEM Community,
This is a collaboration request to ALL iGEM teams! Join us in showcasing the wonderment of iGEM and synthetic biology by creating a science sketch of your team’s project or any major techniques/principles that your project is using.
Through the series of 1-3-minute sketches, we hope to promote public awareness of the iGEM competition as well as to show how synthetic biology can be utilized to solve problems facing mankind in an innovative manner!
The aim of the science sketches is to make a collaborative educational playlist with videos from teams all over the world, about their projects and/or the scientific principle behind their project. This playlist will be made public, so that any iGEM team can use it in their outreach activities, thus enabling all teams to spread the knowledge of synthetic biology to their communities.
It is preferable that we receive the video of the science sketches before the 20th of September, 2019. This would give us enough time to make the playlist and also show it in outreach events. Please make sure to add your team's name and your institution's name at the end or beginning of the video.
Should you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us! We have also created a detailed description of how to make a science sketch. Hope this helps!
Curious about what science sketches are like? Check out the science sketch that our team has created for iGEM! Here are two other examples, RPA, LAMP, for those considering making one for scientific principles/techniques.
Join us and have a lot of fun! Be creative!
We look forward to hearing from you!
Warm regards,
iGEM NYU Abu Dhabi 2019
1. Postcards
Team: Duesseldorf
Team Location: Heinrich-Heine University, Germany
Contact Information: igem[AT]hhu.de
Description:
Hey iGEM Teams,As we all know iGEM is not only about experiments and labwork but also about bringing the topic “synthetic biology” closer to the public. In order to do so the previous iGEM teams of the Heinrich-Heine-University of Duesseldorf created a project to promote synthetic biology in public using self-designed postcards. Each year a bunch of iGEM teams decided to join which is why the campaign was a huge success with a lot of beautiful and funny postcards as a result.
How does it work? Every participating team designs a postcard which shows an image related to synthetic biology (or your topic) on the front and a small informational text on the back. Afterwards each team’s postcards are exchanged with other iGEM-teams so that every team can collect postcards from all over the world. The received postcards can then be shared with people in the neighborhood, during public events etc.
If you want to check out the last year’s campaigns for inspiration, visit the wiki of Duesseldorf 2016 or the wiki of Duesseldorf-Cologne 2017
How to design your postcards:
Image related to your project or (synthetic) biology in general on the front
Small informational text on the back
Standard postcard format (A6; 14,8cm x 10,5cm)
If you are interested in joining us please let us know until the 15th of June, so we can figure out how many postcards each team should print and send. Please don't forget to include your address! Important: This is not the deadline for sending and designing the postcard!
We’re looking forward to hearing from you!
Much love,
iGEM Team Duesseldorf 2019
