2. Competition Registration

Below is the information about team registration for the 2019 iGEM Competition. Here you will learn about Team Kind, Affiliation, Fees, and Registration Requirements for all Team Kinds.

Please refer to the Registration Handbook before you start the registration process as it can help guide you through the steps required for registration, such as creating user accounts and team profiles.

Step 1: Register Your Team

Once you have read the requirements on this page and you are ready to register your team for iGEM 2019, please click the button below to begin the registration process. This will walk you through making a user account (if you don't have one already) and setting up your team profile page.

Step 2: Pay Your Registration Fee

Once you have registered your team, you are now ready to pay the team registration fee. Details on the different ways that you can pay your team registration fee can be found at the bottom of the page. If you are ready to pay your fee, click the button below. Please note: Late registration ends on April 30, 2019.

Registration Requirements

2.1 Team Kind

In iGEM 2019, teams will register as one of three team "kinds", and each kind will have different registration requirements. The three team kinds are:

  • Collegiate: Teams consist primarily of collegiate students. You may also have postgraduate students and/or high school students on the team.
  • High School: Teams consist of only high school students and students who will graduate high school in 2019. High School teams compete with other High School teams in the High School Track and Section.
  • Community Lab: Teams consist of members of a community lab. This can include anyone. Community Lab teams compete with Collegiate teams in the Traditional and Special Tracks and in the Undergraduate and Overgraduate Sections based on the team members' ages.

2.2 Team Affiliation

Several schools may combine to form a team, and one school may have several teams. For example, it is normal for one school to have both software and wetlab teams.

2.3 Fees

Each team pays a team registration fee, which provides the team with a team wiki, associated materials (including the 2019 Distribution Kit) and support, one presentation slot at the Giant Jamboree, and one poster location at the Giant Jamboree. Additionally, each individual who attends the Giant Jamboree must pay an attendance fee to gain entrance.

Team registration fees for iGEM 2019 are:

  • Regular registration: $5000 USD
  • Late registration: TBD
  • Multiple team discount: a discount of $1000 USD

Detailed instructions for submitting your team registration fee are at the bottom of the page.

Giant Jamboree attendance fees for iGEM 2019 are:

  • Giant Jamboree attendance: TBD per team member (PI, instructor, advisor, student)

2.4 General Team Registration

The following are required for general team registration. After submission of the iGEM.org registration application and the team registration fee, iGEM Headquarters will contact the team’s primary Principal Investigator (PI) for verification.

  1. Team registration application, to be completed by the team's primary Principal Investigator (PI)
  2. Team registration fee
  3. Contact with the team's primary PI
  4. High School and Community Lab teams have additional requirements (see below)

High School team registration

During registration, High School teams should register as the High School team “kind”.

In addition to the general team registration requirements above, each high school team must complete and submit a set of consent forms.

All high school track participants must submit the appropriate consent forms. Consent forms are required from all high school track participants including instructors, advisors, students, and others. You can download the necessary consent forms below. Print and complete these forms, then mail them to the address at the bottom of this page. Please also see the 2019 Calendar for the deadline for team rosters.

If your team is using high school laboratory facilities, the team will need to submit the following consent forms:

  1. Each high school student must submit a participant consent form signed by his/her parent or guardian
  2. Each PI, instructor, and advisor/mentor must submit a participant consent form
  3. A principal of each high school represented on the team must sign the principal consent form

If your team is using laboratory facilities outside of the high school, the team will need to submit the following consent forms:

  1. Each high school student must submit a participant consent form signed by his/her parent or guardian
  2. Each PI, instructor, and advisor/mentor must submit a participant consent form
  3. A principal of each high school represented on the team must sign the principal consent form
  4. The department head in charge of the laboratory facility used by the team must sign the department head consent form

If you have any questions, or if your team does not fall into either category, contact iGEM Headquarters at: documents AT igem DOT org

The original hard copy of the consent forms must be sent to iGEM Headquarters at the following address:

Meagan Lizarazo / iGEM HS 2019
One Kendall Square
Building 600 - Suite B6104
Cambridge, MA 02139

Digital copies may be sent to documents AT igem DOT org but the team application will not be approved until the original hard copies of the consent form for each team member are received.

We strongly recommend shipping the consent forms via a carrier that will provide a tracking number and providing that number to documents AT igem DOT org.

Community Lab team registration

During registration, Community Lab teams should register as the Community Lab team “kind”.

In addition to the general team registration requirements above, each community lab team must complete the following additional requirements and send the applicable documentation to documents AT igem DOT org:

  1. demonstrate access to a BL 1 lab
  2. demonstrate an adequate safety training program
  3. must be an incorporated entity (for profit or not-for-profit)
