CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL iGEM 2019 PARTICIPANTS!
Thank you to everyone who participated in the 2019 season of the International Genetically Engineered Machine Competition.
Undergraduate Grand Prize Winner
NCKU Tainan
1 in 10 people worldwide suffer from Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), a condition with no cure. This team from the National Cheng Kung University won the Undergraduate Grand Prize with their biological systems for measuring and reducing p-Cresol levels, a uremic toxin that worsens the health outcomes of CKD patients.
Overgraduate Grand Prize Winner
EPFL
For farmers with diseased plants, four weeks can be too long to wait for a diagnosis when the health of the entire crop depends on it. This team from Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne built a field-deployable test enabling farmers to detect fatal plant diseases and save crop loss, while reducing pesticide use.
High School Grand Prize Winner
GreatBay SZ
This team of students from the Shenzhen area took home the High School Grand Prize with their project SPIDERMAN - SPIDroin EngineeRing with chroMoprotein And Natural dye. Inspired by superhero battle suits, they biosynthesized colored spider silk, a material with applications in medicine, textiles, and aerospace fields.
Undergraduate First Runner Up
Calgary
Canada, the largest global producer of canola oil is faced by the "green seed problem", an issue that costs the industry $150m every year. This team from the University of Calgary engineered a biological solution to improve the production pipeline at every step, yielding more high-quality product at a lower environmental cost.
Undergraduate Second Runner Up
TU Kaiserslautern
Energy intensive, releasing CO2, or requiring nasty chemicals: current plastic recycling is not ideal. This team from Technische Universität Kaiserslautern created a biological recycling method for polyethylene terephthalate (PET), a major plastic component, integrated within existing sanitation systems to eliminate plastic pollution.
Overgraduate First Runner Up
Wageningen UR
Xylella fastidiosa is a devastating plant pathogen that has destroyed agricultural industries around the world. Now, it threatens similar economic damage across Europe. This team from Wageningen University & Research developed a comprehensive system to both detect and cure plants of Xylella infections.
