Description

Proposal for submitting to GenScript

Problem:
High concentration of carbon dioxide in enclosed space make people feel sleepy and even dizzy. This can even result in
(1) fell asleep during class.
(2) driver may fell asleep, causing accident to happen.

CO2 analysis:
In order to prove the seriousness , we measure the CO2 concentration in enclosed spaces and analysis the results.
If the concentration of CO2 is between :
● 350~1000 ppm, the air is fresh
● 1000~2000 ppm, people feel the air turbid and start feeling drowsy
● 2000~5000 ppm, people feel headache, lethargy, sluggishness, heart beat hasten, mild nausea
● above 5000 ppm, it may cause severe hypoxia, coma..

Reflection: GE mosquito application

Why: To understand pest control by fluorescence and GE mosquito work

How: We met Dr. Yu-Chan Chao from Institute of Molecular Biology, Academia Sinica through video chat to discuss the paper he published for his research in United States. [Nature (1996) Pest control by fluorescence.]

What:

1. He described the biotechnique he developed in the paper.
2. He introduced his current work and research interests in his lab.
3. He gave comments to our project about the blood testing with GE mosquitoes.
4. He encouraged us never give up and continue toward the goal what we set in the beginning.

Reflection:

We’re excited about the work Dr. Chao did using GE insect to pest control by fluorescence. It’s not only interesting but also workable. We learned doing scientific research in a lab is not easy at all, as what we experienced in iGEM project this year. However, we’re encouraged from the distinguished researcher and will keep moving forward to our dream.
