2. Poster

Each team is given one poster slot, and only students listed on the team's roster can present the poster during the scheduled Poster Sessions at the Giant Jamboree.

On this page you will find the poster requirements, poster guidelines, including: expected poster components and font sizes. You will also find details on presenting at the Giant Jamboree and printing at the Giant Jamboree. At the bottom of the page you will find an example poster.

Poster Requirements

  • Each team can present one (1) poster during the Giant Jamboree
  • Poster dimensions cannot exceed 4 ft x 4 ft (1.22 m x 1.22 m)
  • Only students listed on the team roster can present the poster during the scheduled poster sessions at the Giant Jamboree
  • Teams must print their poster prior to the Giant Jamboree and bring it with them
  • Teams must submit a PDF copy of their poster to iGEM Headquarters at the Giant Jamboree (details on how to submit will be provided closer to the Giant Jamboree)
Note

Your poster may be smaller than these dimensions, but it cannot be larger. If your poster is larger, you may take up more space than the poster boards will allow, causing issues for the team next to you.

Poster Guidelines

In iGEM, the purpose of the poster is to communicate the project to others in a very concise, yet engaging manner. Many posters in the past have been “busy” and “unbalanced” with regards to text, figures, and space. Although past winning posters may not have had this balance, it will be an important criterion in judging this year and in future iGEM Jamborees.

Expected iGEM Poster Components

Teams should plan to have the following components on their poster in some manner:

  • Title
  • Team
  • Authors and their Affiliated Institution(s)
  • Introduction
  • Methodology
  • Results/Conclusions
  • Acknowledgments
  • Funding Attributions (if applicable)

Past iGEM teams have also elected to include additional components on their posters such as:

  • Abstract
  • Objectives
  • Motivation
  • Team Achievements
  • Future Directions
  • Human Practices
  • Parts Submitted

Font sizes

Font size must be readable from a distance. Recommended font sizes are:

  • 44 pt for headers
  • 38-40 pt for body text
  • 18-24 pt for captions beneath figures
  • 18 pt for references

Presenting Your Poster at the Giant Jamboree

This year, we will have scheduled poster sessions on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday during the Giant Jamboree. Teams are assigned to the poster sessions that are scheduled on the day of their presentation. Each team is expected to present their poster at their assigned sessions. Your assigned poster session will be available closer to the event.

In 2018, teams were assigned to the next poster session after their presentation. e.g. If your presentation was in Presentation Session A or B in the morning, your poster session would then be in Poster Session A & B during the lunch time break. If your presentation was in Presentation Session C or D in the afternoon, your poster session would be in Poster Session C & D at the end of the day.

Note

In addition, some teams have elected to display supplemental materials at their poster station. These displays have included laptop/tablet presentations, team prepared pamphlets/handouts, and 3-D printed models. The supplemental materials will not be factored into the judging of the poster.
If you have a large display, you may want to consider applying for a spot in the Exhibition Space closer to the Giant Jamboree.

Printing at the Giant Jamboree

Onsite printing services are available through FedEx at the Hynes Convention Center. For details, please visit their website: Hynes Convention Center Fedex.
