Besides hosting the Nordic iGEM Conference, the Ovulaid team has attendended 5 iGEM meetups in preparation to the Giant Jamboree. The two Danish meetups BioBrick Tutorial and the Danish iGEM Weekend in Lyngby and Faaborg respectively. The team has also gone to the European meetups the InParis Meetup in Paris, The iGEM Hackathon: Lab app in Vilnius, and the Synbio Gone Viral in Leuven, Belgium. At these meetups The Ovulaid team have fine tuned their project, gained invaluable feedback, and most importantly had a good time with fellow iGEMers.

Biobrick Tutorial 2019

12-14.04.19
The Technical University of Denmark (DTU) Biobuilders 2019 team hosted the Biobrick Tutorial 2019. All Nordic teams were invited to learn about Biobricks, human practices, the wiki page and much more. Next to the many presentations and workshops, the teams had the opportunity to socialize, have fun and open up for collaborations. We learned a lot from this weekend and thank DTU’s iGEM team for the organization of this awesome event and all the fun that we had participating at it!

Synapse connect UK

28.04.19-04.05.19
In May two of our team members, Benedicte and Anett, got the amazing opportunity to attend a week-long seminar in the United Kingdom to explore the life science clusters in London and Cambridge. There, they could learn from some of the world-leading companies and organizations such as Lonza, Pfizer, EMBL-EBI, Francis Crick Institute, Topra, and Wellcome Trust. Some of the topics that were touched upon in this seminar included: Research, entrepreneurship, synthetic biology, career development, and regulatory affairs. Our members used this opportunity to ask several project related questions from industry professionals and they came back from this trip full of new ideas and inspirations.

inParis European meetup

25.-28.07.19
Three of our team members had the pleasure of going to the inParis European meetup. Here, 20 teams from all over Europe had the opportunity to participate in a Mini Jamboree, a poster session as well as some interesting workshops. The Mini Jamboree went well for our team members who won third place for “best presentation”! Overall, we can look back on three really informative days with great fun. We are really happy to have met the other European iGEM teams and to have seen how much progress they had made so far!

Danish iGEM Weekend

26.-28.07.19
The University of Southern Denmark (SDU) team has invited us and the DTU team to their country residence to spend an informative weekend on wiki and presentation planning. Next to the “how to” workshops, there was plenty of time to socialize. We enjoyed the nice nature in Faaborg, went for a swim in the ocean, and played impro theatre games. Most importantly, we enjoyed each other's company and we got to know the SDU and DTU team even better than before.

BioHackathon’19: Lab App

02.-04.08.19
Three team members went to Vilnius to take part in 2019’s BioHackathon. The participants were challenged with the creation of a ‘lab app’ that could solve a problem under the following themes: Biosafety and security of data, synthetic biology, lab efficiency, life science education. Our team members used this opportunity to spend an intense weekend developing the Ovulaid app. Check out our results *here*! The Vilnius team were great hosts and we were thrilled to get invaluable advice from a highly skilled team of mentors. They helped us with insights on marketing, business planning, and integration of the app, and we can’t wait to catch up in Boston with all the iGEM friends that we have made there.

SynBio Gone Viral

20.-22.09.19
Three people attended the SynBio Gone Viral meetup in Leuven, Belgium. During the meetup, the various speakers presented different areas of synthetic biology related to their respective work. We also had a great time visiting a local brewery with some of the other participants where we learned how to brew and pour a beer. The most interesting aspect of the meetup was a mini jamboree in which we won the prize for the best presentation. And let us not forget the Belgian waffles, chocolate, and fries!
