Human Practices

Medal Criteria Summary

"Reflexivity Principle + Principles of Economics" Agreement:

In order to fully consider the interaction between the world and the project, adjust the progress of the project in time and make reasonable decisions to solve the problems we encountered, we introduced the basic principles of sociology and economics, and constantly revised and integrated the establishment of "Reflexivity principle + Principles of Economics".

Essay Activity

In order to promote college students' understanding of synthetic biology and to inspire people to think about the possible safety and ethical issues, we organized a series of essay activities on "Future Synthetic Biology". We recorded the general progress of the event and found an article that we thought was very creative.

Joint Video Shooting

In the course of the project, we have provided some helpful help to some teams, and also received support from some teams. In the discussion with many teams, we all realized that the society lacks understanding of microbes. We have invited many teams to cooperate in filming and promoting the creative science videos about the "World of Microorganism".

Medals

Silver

As a key part of the project, our human practice is always linked to the project and through our integrated "Reflexivity principle + Principles of Economics" agreement, to participate in and guide the entire project and to constantly think about the interaction between each of our key work and the world.

At the same time, the promotion of synthetic biology and the iGEM competition to the public is also an important part of our human practice. We designed and held a series of interesting and meaningful public participation activities, which also increased the public's attention and also made us understand some of the views of Chinese college students on the development of synthetic biology.

We also worked with a number of iGEM teams to help and advance each other's projects.

From the beginning, we are thinking about how to constantly think about the interaction between our work and the world and integrate the collection of information from outside to guide the design, development, implementation and adjustment of our project. We creatively integrated the basic principles of sociology and economics into the "Reflexivity Principle + Principles of Economics" agreement to guide the progress of our project.

In order to make better use of this agreement, we divided it into two different copies, one for recording and reflecting on the possible impact of our work on the world, and the other for rational analysis at all stages of the project to solve the difficult problems we encountered. We have found that this "one-two" attempt allows us to use the agreement more effectively.

Below is the "Reflexivity Principle + Principles of Economics" agreement that we continually modify and finalize. We hope that our work can be used as a reference for other iGEM teams.

This agreement has guided us through all aspects of our work and has helped us in the whole process of the project. Here are the many significant impacts of these two agreements:

  • In the brainstorming stage

  • In the experimental design stage

    • Schizosaccharomyces pombe and "shuttle carrier"

    • Fusion of Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Yarrowia lipolytic

    • Single base editor

  • In the modeling and characterization stage

  • In the public promotion stage

    • "Future Synthetic Biology" essay activity

    • "World of microorganism" joint video

  • Teamwork

We are not the first team to use the theory of reflexive theory to guide the project, but we are the first team to integrate the basic ideas of sociology and economics into scientific experiments and integrate them into two agreements. We believe that the iGEM teams should seriously consider the interaction between the project and the world, and hope that our work will be inspiring and useful for the iGEM team afterwards.
