Human Practices

Overview and methodology

Human practice focuses on contacting experts from different areas like anti-fouling, medical repair and biological protein glue, to explore the potential of adhesive protein to be applied for use in those areas, and eventually, we want to develop a product based on the suggestions given by the experts. Besides product design, in order to improve our project design, we met several experts in synthetic biology and bioadhesives as well.

How to conduct the interviews scientifically

-Carefully went through iGEM human experimentation policy
-Researched standardized methods for conducting interviews
-Produced a small poster introducing our team.

How did we design our protocols for interviews

1. Starting with a script to introduce our project and then asking for the permission from the participants to record this interview.
2. Begin with easy to answer questions (e.g. what’s your job about?) to warm up and move towards ones that are more difficult or controversial.
-Questions should be open ended and expansive since qualitative research is all about the materialization of unexpected data from our participants and expansive questions allow the participants to take our question in several directions. (e.g. tell us things we need to consider in our product design.)
-Designing bullet points to remind us of areas that have emerged from things we think will enrich our data. (e.g. packing)
3. Interview shouldn’t be too long, so generally, our interview takes an hour to an hour and a half to get through.
